In the release version of Windows 11, keyboard users did not have the option to select one of the layouts using the keyboard. Keyboard users using Snap Assist with the Windows-Z shortcut will notice that numbers are now displayed for each of the available layouts.
#WINDOWS 10 FORCE ALTTAB UPDATE#
Microsoft is improving Snap Assist in two significant ways in an upcoming feature update for Windows 11. Snap Assist is expanding available layouts on large displays and combines functionality so that they are available in the program window itself. There, users had the option of displaying one window on one side of the screen and two windows split in half vertically, or four windows on the screen, each occupying a corner of the screen. Microsoft introduced support for closing windows to a quarter of the screen in Windows 10. All it takes is to drop the program window to the left or right side of the screen. Windows supports docking two program windows next to each other on the desktop. Even those who know it exists can sometimes forget it’s an option. In fact, many Windows 11 users probably don’t know that Snap Assist exists. The beauty of Snap Assist is that it extends Windows’ ability to display multiple windows side by side on the screen without getting in the way. Users can choose the location of the active window and other windows they want to see again. Windows 11 displays the available layouts, and choosing one of the layouts aligns the active window and other open windows accordingly. The Windows-Z keyboard shortcut can also be used to call a function.

Snap Assist can be accessed by hovering over the window expand button. 50% to 25%, three windows with one occupying 50% of the screen and the other two split vertically, and four windows each occupying 25% of the space. Layouts depend on the display size, but include options to align two windows side by side at 50% by 50% and 75% by 25%, three windows side by side, three windows at 25% aspect ratio.

Snap Assist, a feature to manage program windows more efficiently, was well received when it was introduced.Įssentially, Snap Assist gives users the ability to align app windows on the screen based on a number of supported patterns. Microsoft didn’t introduce too many new features in Windows 11. In the third part of the series, we’re going to take a closer look at the changes Microsoft is making to Windows 11’s Snap Assist feature in the WindUpdate.
